Ranjit Lall is Director of the Centre for Technology and Society at the Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative and Professor of International Political Economy at the University of Oxford, where he is a Fellow of St John's College.

His research examines the political economy of technological change, international cooperation and economic development. His current work asks how artificial intelligence is reshaping democratic politics: how the technology is redistributing economic and political power, what that means for public attitudes and party competition, and how expectations about the labour market shape the demands citizens make of the state.

His book Making International Institutions Work: The Politics of Performance (Cambridge University Press, 2023) offers a new account of why some international institutions succeed where others fail, combining the most comprehensive dataset assembled on the question with in-depth case studies across a range of issue areas. His work has appeared in journals including the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science and International Organization, and he has methodological interests in machine learning and the analysis of incomplete data.

He received his PhD in Government from Harvard University and his BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford. Before beginning his graduate studies he worked as an economist at the Bank of England and an editorial writer at the Financial Times.
