Open Problems in Frontier AI Risk Management

Open Problems in Frontier AI Risk Management

Frontier AI systems are powerful, general-purpose models that amplify existing risks and introduce new challenges for managing safety. Most current risk management standards were designed for narrow AI systems and have not kept pace with rapid advances in frontier AI. As a result, emerging AI safety practices often do not align well with established risk management frameworks.

This project systematically brings together the key open problems in frontier AI risk management across the full risk management process, from planning and identifying risks to analysing, evaluating and mitigating them. For each of these stages, we highlight relevant work, important unresolved challenges and who is best positioned to address them.

The project provides a problem-oriented research agenda and a living online resource to support coordination, reduce duplication, and guide future research, policy, and practice in the field. It also exists as a report, where all relevant contributors can be found. We encourage you to share feedback through the form at the end of each chapter, in the spirit of maintaining this work as a collaborative and evolving effort.
